At long last the tickets have arrived and suddenly the holiday is real and excitement is kicking in. It was only when we got the tickets that we suddenly realised how many flights we have. I know, we booked the holiday but we didn't actually count up the flights, just accepted that we would be seeing a great deal.
A couple of weeks ago we had yellow fever jabs in readiness for Iguazu. £58 each seemed pricey for two days of risk but you can't afford not to can you. Now where else in the world can we go where yellow fever is a risk in order to get value for money? The rules are that after vaccination you are issued with a 10 year certificate that kicks in 10 days after the jab. The daft thing is that the vaccine is supposedly effective for 35 years and later this year the World Health Organisation is going to do away with the 10 year certificate insistence but that doesn't help himself who had a yellow fever jab in 1991 whilst in the navy with the certificate expiring in 2001.
The other thing we found this week is that Chile has very strict controls regarding what you can take into the country. When travelling we usually take plenty of cereal bars with us for snacking and guess what, they're not allowed as they contain, grains, nuts and honey. When you consider how processed these foods are I can't see how they can possibly be a risk. The other thing that we always take is skimmed milk powder for my cups of tea. The powder is allowed but it has to be in its original packaging and sealed. I know it's only a minor thing but it means having to buy another box so that I can take some into Argentina for the first 5 days and then have an unopened box to take into Chile for the remainder of the trip. Best do the same with the tea bags I guess.
